The Humble Beginning
Every sunday evening during one summer of the bygone years, a few friends of us used to meet in the office of our late friend Mr.M.S. Samdani, for the act of chit chatting and simultaneously relishing together the chicken 65 that was placed before us. On one such occasion, some old ladies intervened asking for alms. But the sight they presented was very appalling and pitiable. Some of us grew sad and some turned generous. We gave money to the old women and again we resumed our session enjoying the chicken and discussing seriously, about the street problems, international affairs, urdu language and poetry, and problems facing urdu speaking people. This was going on for week after week.
One such evening in the summer of 1985, we - the friends said why not we all join together to do something to alleviate the sufferings of these poor women of our community. Yes, the idea was good - everyone jumped at it and decided that we do a thing collectively. We discussed different modules and ultimately came to a conclusion that we should register an Association under the Societies Registration Act with aims and objects of supporting the downtrodden and needy of the community. All the friends contributed their mite and thus "Crescent Welfare Association" came into existence.
We started with eleven members and the like - minded also joined us, in bringing this Association to what it is today. Even though every one of us was busy in his own field, we took out some time for helping the poor and the suffering sisters and brothers. In the beginning we were concentrating only on petty business - by giving articles to prepare morning breakfast and to sell them In the area they live, by that earn their living. Later few more trades like computer, paramedical and other job oriented courses including girls' education were added. Kharz - e-Hasna has become a popular area in which our Association is helping the needy.
Our main source of income is the donation from philanthropists and Contributions from members and other Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan. The members of the Executive Committee jointly created an endowment of Rs.50,000 in the name of Late M. S. Samdani, One of the founder members of the Association and now upgraded to Rs. 1,00,000, the proceeds of which will be given to students doing Audit & Accountancy. We are thankful to Prof. Sulaiman Modi and his family for having created an endowment of Rs. 2.00,500/-,and now upgraded to Rs.3,00,000, the proceeds of which will be spent on Girl’s Education.
Dear friends, three decades have passed. We still feel that it is yesterday that we had embarked on this project. The aims and objects still hold good in today's situation the community is passing through. I feel that everyone in the community to whom Allah Subhanatala has rewarded with health, wealth, and happiness should join hands and work In the well-being of Ummah.
In our effort towards service to the poor and the under -privileged. I pray to Almighty Allah that we continue to work without loss of momentum and work for the fulfillment of the projects we have set forth. May Allah reward all those who are associated with the organization, doing selfless service, in this world and in the hereafter.
May Allah show us the right path - Ameen.
